Holiday Break
My wife & I are out of town for the holidays, so I won't be able to do much drawing or scanning until we get back. I threw some random stuff on a thumb drive and will be posting that while we're gone like this sketch for a story idea I had:
I'll continue my impromtu little comic story when I get back next week.

Welcome to the End of the Future...
My friend Shane White has been working on a mini-series for Image Comics called The Overman. The first issue is out this week:
It looks amazing, and I can't wait to see what it's all about.
Shane, I apologize if I botched your design in this sketch:

Kung Fro
After listening to a podcast interview with comics writer B. Clay Moore, I looked at some of the preview art for his new book, '76. It's kind of a mix of Grindhouse & The Last Dragon with very cool expressive art by Ed Tadem. Just trying my hand at that sort of look:

Saboteur
Last week my wife & I went to an exhibit of production art from Alfred Hitchcock's films at Northwestern (info here). It was very cool seeing storyboards blown up & hung along side a monitor playing the final sequence from the film. My favorites were from the Statue of Liberty scene in Saboteur:

Super Friends
I was looking at some old cartoon art from the 30's & 40's on the Animation Archive when I drew these - just trying to get some of the line quality those artists had back then:

Little Green Men
Someday I'd love to do a 50's space age inspired adventure strip with pipe smoking scientists and pesky little green men. In the mean time, I'll just watch genius that is the Venture Bros.

Turtlemen
I'm not the spontaneous type who puts pencil to paper without knowing what I'm trying to draw, but these Turtlemen just came out of left field one day. It probably had something to do with the recent and untimely death of comic book artist Mike Wieringo who never had the chance to finish his anthropomorphic fantasy epic, Tellos.
Thanks for the inspiration, Mike. RIP.

The Duke Redux
A friend of mine, Shane White, recently posted a caricature of John Wayne he drew for a birthday card. I thought he did a great job on it, and it inspired me to try my hand at drawing the Duke.
I'll admit I'm not a big John Wayne fan, so I haven't seen many of his movies, but he had a great face that is fun to draw. I drew these quickly from memory - the image of him with the eye patch in one of last films is how I always picture him, and the other one is from a Dirty Harry knock-off he made called McQ, which I caught on AMC recently.

Halloween Wrap-up
I thought I'd squeeze in the last few Halloween monster sketches before the rest of the holidays started rolling in. Here's the one that got it started - a quick and very loose headless horseman:
The Creature sketch I posted the other day was next, and after that was this Mummy sketch:
Lastly, a drunk looking Frankenstein. I added the word balloons after I finished and decided that he looked like he'd had a few too many - so much for ending on a high note:

Lunchtime Sketches!
I thought I'd start a blog to archive some of the quick sketches I do during my lunch hour and any other time I can spare.
I'll get things started with something I drew the week before Halloween. I was having a hard time getting into it this year, so I thought drawing some monsters might help me out. This is about as involved as I can get in an hour or so, so don't expect everything to be this polished, if you can call it polished :)
Thanks for looking.
